New gaming PC (:
Finally got my gaming PC built and it's fuckin' rad. Initially when I built it, I thought the graphics were a bit underwhelming but still pretty cool. Went from a chunk render distance of like 8 in Minecraft Bedrock Edition on my old laptop to 40 and still stable, which is a crazy upgrade. And then, I find out that the graphics card wasn't installed properly and I was just using my computer's integrated graphics. It took hours and hours of headache before I realized the GPU was in the wrong slot. And then I took the render distance up to like 65 and turned up the graphics settings. I am in heaven. I'll probably play on a render distance more like 55 because Minecraft performance tends to get shittier as you build, but that's still astronomically farsighted.
Plus I got to turn up the graphics to the maximum outside of vibrant visuals.
I spent the rest of the evening yesterday just downloading a shit ton of Skyrim mods. I just didn't feel up to playing Minecraft, and I need to be in a very particular kind of mood to properly start a Minecraft world. You know? I want this next one to be my forever world, so I want to wait until I'm really ready.
I do really like this gaming rig. I kinda just found the parts list on Reddit, as it was posted by the mod of some technical subreddit. Wish I could find it again to properly thank them. I plugged it into PC Parts Picker and made a couple of adjustments (using a top-rated cooling system and 1 16 GB RAM stick instead of 2 8 GB RAM sticks), but that was really it. And that second part is just to make it easier to upgrade later, I used the same brand and everything.
Outside of the kickass PC, my whole computer station is kind of slapdash. I only have one ethernet cable so I have to reconnect it every time I want to switch between my work computer & my gaming PC. My computer monitors only have one HDMI port each, so I have to physically switch the cables, too, and then do the same for my keyboard and mouse. I'll probably have to come up with a real solution to all these little QOL fuck ups, but for now things are chill.
The worst thing by far is the fact that the lighting in my home office just sucks. It's a little hard to fix because there's really no floor space for a lamp and the space directly behind me is a sliding door, so mounting lights there would be somewhat impractical. I can mount lights on the other walls, but my eyes tend to be a bit sensitive. I'm buying some night lights and a big power strip for the top of the wall behind me. Will report back about it.
