I feel the same way about body products and makeup. They shouldn't be allowed to just discontinue a line of products all of a sudden.
With that said, I have experienced putting time, money, and energy into different software, websites, and video games, only to later have them start experiencing glitches or go offline all together. I know that in most cases someone needs to go in and fix the coding, or better yet, do regular maintenance to keep it functioning smoothly. I agree that if the developers aren't going to maintain it then it should be opened up for others to work on it.
As for taking them court, I don't know. It does seem like there should be some form of responsibility and even liability for those who develop the technology and then don't maintain it. Especially if users have or had paid to use it.

@morrgin ALL society is going to be burdened and not just gamers if EVERY Time they EOL something they offer no support and people feel ripped off because quite often they'll sue, it's the only remedy the current model allows for, which is why new legislation is needed just to keep these cases out of the courtrooms. If you haven't noticed the courts are already pretty stretched.
