That is why I always try to get a demo of the game before I purchase it. Or find out what the return policy is. I have been burned by games not living up to the hype and being crap.

@SW-User Reviewers are sometimes paid by the game makers though. I've played games that have positive reviews, but found the game play was not good at all.
