@Musicman It definitely didn't go as planned. My aunt didn't even know that I was coming. Had to convince her that I was her nephew. Hard to do barely speaking the language. Lucky my cousin once removed knew as much English as I knew German.

The tickets were non refundable and mom couldn't fly at the time.

She came a week later.

I was a free range latchkey kid. That speaks by itself.

Independent doesn't do justice to the term latchkey with kids.
