How often do you take a taxi?
How often you take a taxi in Rome depends on your budget, your itinerary, and how much walking you prefer, as most central sights are close enough to explore on foot.
When to Take a Taxi
• Short hops across town: Rides within the center usually cost between €10 and €15, making them affordable if you are tired or traveling in a small group.
• Airport transfers: Use the fixed-rate cabs to and from Fiumicino Airport (€48–€50) or Ciampino Airport (€30) rather than paying a metered fare.
• Late nights or heavy luggage: Taxis are much easier than crowded metro lines or night buses when you are carrying bags or traveling after 10:00 PM.
Key Ways to Get a Taxi in Rome
• Taxi Stands (Stazione dei Taxi): You cannot easily hail a cab by waving on the street. Instead, walk to the nearest orange taxi stand (found at major piazzas, train stations like Termini, and tourist spots) and take the first cab in line.
• Apps: Use apps like FREENOW or itTaxi to book and pay digitally.
• Phone / WhatsApp: Call local dispatch numbers like 06 3570 (Radiotaxi 3570). Keep in mind that calling or booking via an app starts the meter when the car is dispatched to you, not when you get inside.
