why do people buy junky cars like those when you can get a used luxury car for far less with just a little tinkering to get them working?

The mercury will run in spite of you, not because of you. Body on frame and rear wheel drive is the way to go.

Which one is cheaper to insure? Any would be an excellent choice.

The Mercury Grand Marquis is a really good car. Keep it serviced and it will run forever.

Why are you wanting to drive old junk that's between 17 and 26 years old?
That old 2000 Grand Marquis was an old man's car 26 years ago even when it was brand new and any guy who was an old man 26 years ago and bought one brand new from a Dealership is now sitting inside a ceramic urn on top of someone's fireplace mantle today.
