Anyone else have a toyota that has the aluminum heat shields rotting lose and rattling on their muffler?

They used steel nutts to retain the aluminum panels. That combination sets up a galvanic reaction when it becomes wet and in no time chews through the aluminum anode. I just had to put bigger, heavy aluminum washers on with stop nuts. Stainless washers are no good. They have to be a lower galvanic potential.

Worth putting grease on the fasteners too, to reduce electrical contact. It's not infallible but every little helps.

Do the shields themselves become hot? If not, then large plastic washers and silicone sealant to keep water out of the joint, are another option.
