This is why half the world hates the USA. We're strong arming them on global tariffs

Photo above - first it was "them Japs". Then the Germans. Now China wants to sell affordable cars to Americans. This is the BYD "seagull" electric vehicle. It costs $10,000. The White House wants to put 100% tariffs on these.

I consider myself a patriot. I also cut China no slack for Uighur work camps, the massacre at Tiananmen Square, hacking the US grid, and constant threats to invade Taiwan in order to steal its computer chip factories. That said, I'd like to criticize the USA today for it's latest antics. See link below.

Who doesn't love affordable foreign-made merchandise? If you shop on Amazon, at least half their stuff comes from China. (The rest comes from Pakistan and India, I believe). You literally HAVE to cancel your Amazon membership if you want to only buy things made in America. Many of the components in Detroit made cars come straight from Chinese Siberia and are simply shipped to America for final bolt-on by UAW factory workers. Now it's 100% made in America!

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has a solution. Instead of better disclosures about what items are made with prison camp labor or from stolen US patents, she wants to put 100% tariffs on lots of Chinese stuff. Actually, Ms. Yellen says it's not her idea - this comes straight from the White House. But since President Biden doesn't personally go shopping, or even have an Amazon account, Chinese tariffs are probably something he overheard a campaign aide suggest.

The main target of Chinese tariffs is cheap EVS of course. But US import duties won't stop carmakers like BYD from conquering the planet, unless we can arm twist Europe into joining our home-grown tariffs. In theory, Europe should be happy to help. They're all about protectionism. The EU is trying to outlaw Google, Microsoft Windows, and Starbucks. So Chinese cars might also be in the mix, right? Hence, Janet's phone marathon to European capitols.

In practice however, European citizens will LOVE cheap Chinese electric vehicles. Europe has even more draconian pollution and “green energy” rules. And limited parking. A 10-foot-long EV that recharges with household current - and goes 180 miles (300 KM) is tailor made for European cities. Especially if it costs $12,000. The BYD seagull (pictured above) is probably going to outsell Volkswagen's $50,000 ID4 electric mini-van, which is styled to impersonate the classic microbus. Yellen wants European politicians to shoot themselves in the head, with EV tariffs. At one point, America considered using tariffs to stop the tidal wave of cheap Volkswagens from Germany. It didn't really work.

Gee whizz Janet, do you think this might possibly happen again in Europe and the USA? And that affordable clean vehicles are a good idea, and not something to be used as a football during a tough election year? Maybe you and President Biden should have a drink, and a brief talk about things like US inflation, sustainability, and the viewpoints of American car buyers?

I'm just sayin' . . .

If we did away with all the overpaid labor unions and absurd government over regulation, we could be competitive again; but no, the government wants to run business like a drug cartel, then have the gall to go on live TV and virtue signal about it... 🤔

@wildbill83 people should be free to join unions. companies should be free to hire replacement workers.
