Are ships actually going though the Hormuz Strait?

Some sources keep saying there's only a handful of ships that are transiting the strait each day. Other sources are saying ships are turning off their transponders. But if the US has ships parked outside of the strait, wouldn't they easily see at least oil tankers trying to leave?
