Adding a car to the herd...
Today I am getting a Toyota Prius plug in hybrid certified for road worthiness and then will transfer the title..
I needed a new daily driver as my small SUV was damaged in a hail storm.. its still drivable and I will keep it for trailer towing but it moves to being an occasional use vehicle...
The Prius was owned since new by a friend who now had four plug in hybrids.. and needed to shed one of them.. so it has all worked out pretty well..
I have never had a vehicle like this before but honestly its rather brilliant.. this from a guy who drove a Corvette for 25 years and owns a Cadillac sedan we inherited and has a classic Mercedes sedan as summer cars..
So why am I quickly loving this Toyota Prius plug in hybrid? This despite me NOT liking Japanese / Korean cars? I do mostly short hop drives.. grocery shopping, picking up my Wife from work, going to my Mothers house... she is elderly....going to the yacht club and back.. This thing uses next to NO gasoline for how I drive.. I plug it in when I am home, I plug it in at the yacht club parking lot, I plug it in at my Mothers house and in combined driving using it this way I filled up 2 US gallons of fuel after eight days of this...I am averaging 120 miles per gallon in how I use this car.. it can handle groceries, it can handle a weekend at the yacht club.. I am fitting it with a trailer hitch for light duty moving of stuff that won't fit in the back of it...heavier stuff is why I am holding on to the dinged up SUV.. I literally can pay for the car in NOT paying for the fuel I am not buying.. All of a sudden...I don't CARE what the price of fuel is.. I had to top up my centre console motor boat which has a 90 hp outboard.. That six gallons of fuel cost me $50... The car cost $10 and it went a whole lot further on that $10 than the motor boat goes on five times that much money... This one has low miles, is in very good condition - we are doing the brakes today, changing the oil and perhaps an air filter, installing the hitch.. I put in an outlet outside my garage, one outside my Mothers garage.. and it plugs into a regular outlet..
All of a sudden I don't think about wasting money going somewhere.. its a very freeing feeling .. I want to go up to the range which is a good hike.. I go because combined fuel economy on the highway is dirt cheap.. This thing changes the way you think... its a very different car...Its an entire culture shock.. the Mercedes I really love the Cadillac is great they both work perfectly the SUV tows stuff and will make a good spare car in the winter.. Its sort of like shoes.. If you have plenty of shoes you don't wear them out very quickly.. I do not feel deprived in the least.. I actually feel freed by the choices that I have..
