Roundabouts

Poll - Total Votes: 11
God yes, they're ridiculous!
No, I like being confused.
I don't drive, so have no opinion on the topic.

I fail to see the necessity for them, because in spite of all of the "research" that has supposedly been done that has somehow demonstrated their effectiveness in reducing accidents, they're actually a nuisance and a hazard. I've been driving now for a while (since I was 22), and not only have I never had an accident, but I've never even come close to having one, except...
Yes, you guessed it, except near a roundabout. We're told to give way to traffic approaching the intersection from the right, but what if there are already four cars about to enter the intersection from different directions? Who goes first? Isn't this a stalemate?
Then of course there is the fact that they're a real hazard for pedestrians, because it has happened to me that I was already within the intersection and someone decided that that was a good time to walk to the other side, right in front of me, with the result that I ended up blocking the intersection while I waited for them to cross.
No, roundabouts are stupid. What do you think? Agree? Of course you do! ☺️
Edit: And let's not forget how difficult it is for trucks, especially really large ones, to get through the intersection without going over the circle in the centre that usually has large plants on it that block one's view, thus creating yet another hazard for drivers.

Roundabouts started to be built where I live to keep the traffic flowing and do away with the stop sign and made it safer to turn at the intersection and most do work well. But some drivers don't understand how to use them and get confused as when to go.....no real instructions or signage.
But they have become a hazard at very busy intersections where there should really be a traffic light. Pedestrians should never try to cross at a roundabout....because traffic never stops for you and they shouldn't have to..... rarely have I seen a roundabout where there is pedestrian traffic.
And yeah to your point...some intersections should not have a roundabout.
@Midlifemale Exactly. The very concept itself is horribly flawed, if only because they're very dangerous for pedestrians.

I agree 100%. Roundabouts are just ridiculous and such a pain in the neck and useless in my opinion. Just stupid. I think they make things more difficult, then helping them. I think there are a real hazard. I could choke the person who came up with that idea and we bought it.

Not confusing at all, in fact it’s been a huge time savor from backed traffic when I take my kids to school. We use to sit in the street line for sometimes close to 15 minutes. Just to get through the intersection.

Now since they’ve added the roundabout, there is never a line of traffic waiting.

@NewBeginnings7790

Your lucky
Your the first that i know who thinks they work
I have several around me and they cause traffic
I've almost been clipped by other drivers trying to exit from the inner circles and cut me off
I've sat waiting to enter longer then if there was a traffic light
Clover leaf would work better
Feuerstern · 51-55, M
Mythbusters proved ( on camera) that they were they most efficient way to negotiate a 4-way intersection. I agree. We have one where I live. I enjoy the roundabout. We just need to install some FIA curbs and up the speed limit. lol...

@Feuerstern

WTF ?
@pdockal That means "all clear". It's German.

I feel that your options are a bit biased, please add options against your own opinion if you aren't busy looking to vent.

We have almost only roundabouts locally where there was traffic lights and constant traffic accidents. Since the roundabouts I haven't heard of a single car accident.

Here's why:

🚙 They force people to automatically slow down

🚙 They need no traffic lights or electricity
which saves the environment and money

🚙 They are universal, every driver knows how a roundabout works world wide

🚙 They prevent traffic jams and you get to your destination much quicker while also safer.

Just because you, a single person who drives through your local roundabouts have managed to become a traffic danger where everyone else is safer, it doesn't mean the safety statistics of roundabouts world wide are less accurate or that roundabouts are a bad idea.

Have you ever considered you might just be bad at driving?
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
@Queendragonfly I agree with most of that and they work very well to keep traffic moving and not causing back-ups and are a fix for many stop-sign intersections but not every driver knows how to maneuver through them or at least not around here....some just too cautious and going way too slow
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Midlifemale So what's needed is a course for people with drivers license in how to handle roundabouts 😂
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Bellatrix2083 Why make a poll if you only make three options that all agree with your own opinion?

In my book that's venting. Not an objective poll.

Of course you're a bad driver if you can't handle a roundabout. No attitude, just facts. Ask any driver teacher!
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
I don't find them confusing, unless driving in France, please add another option.
@MrAverage1965 Driving in fray? What does that mean?
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
@Bellatrix2083 I corrected it
Elessar · 26-30, M
What's even confusing about a roundabout? lol

They make intersections 100x less painful, there's a constant flow and almost no need to stop, the only problem is when three lanes become a single lane within the roundabout because there wasn't room to make a large enough one, but otherwise they're infinitely better than stop lights, uncontrolled intersections or any other mess
@Elessar Nah! Traffic lights and stop/give way signs are a million times better!
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Bellatrix2083 Not a fan of wasting 30+ minutes in traffic that would be like ~5 with a roundabout; especially in my country where the average driver sees a yield or a stop sign and thinks "what is even this thing??"
Teslin · M
In the few recently installed locally they have worked very well. Being cautious and courteous is important.
BUT, you brought up a great point as I have not yet encountered a pedestrian at one yet !!
Just yield to the left and all is good.
@Bellatrix2083 That is the issue, you drive on the wrong side of the road. Lol
@Sojournersoul No, we drive on the correct side. It's you Yanks who are all confused. :P
@Bellatrix2083 You guys even sit on the wrong side of the car. 😋. Glad i am a yank. 😂
SW-User
I find them wonderful and very simple . How are they confusing 🤷‍♂️. You just give right of way to whom ever is in the circle ⭕️. Simple 😃
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@SW-User They're confusing to 0.00000000001% people and she's one of them and that's what her "facts" are based on. 😂
Applepiedom · 56-60, M
They're stupid. I drive through them more like a game of chicken.
Also I drive a semi truck. Try getting those around the damn circle
Strict4u · 56-60, M
I hate them they are useless and crazy
I have adapted to that myself, and I am told that in Europe they’re very common and everybody uses them well but here, it just confuses people,
@SatyrService They're very common in Australia too, unfortunately.
Lilnonames · F
I was going to post about these today as well. They just built a real big one.
