first vacation in a while

My partner and I just got back from our first vacation since COVID. Went to the UP of Michigan. It was so beautiful, never been there before. Lots of places to go hiking and biking but a little cool for outdoor swimming with high temperatures from 59F to 66F while we were there. Couple of hours of rain one afternoon. Would recommend it to anyone that wants a quiet place to go visit. Oh btw great place to purchase fudge never saw so many flavors and at reasonable prices too. We may go back this autumn to see the autumn colors.

If you head back to Michigan, you should check out Sleeping Bear Dunes. :)

@Scribbles Where are the sleeping bear dunes? I didn't see/hear anything about them but would like to check them out. Went to Whitefish Point saw some dunes there they had boardwalks built so you could walk over and around them that was nice.

@Shannon27 It's a good 56 km park along the eastern shoreline of Lake Michigan and near Traverse City. I have many fond memories of both places and have traveled there several times. They have several trails, since they don't want people to ruin the vegetation holding the dunes in place. There is one dune climb trail that is a notable exception which is very very fun and popular. Some of the dunes are easily 400-450 feet high. It's so fun to walk up in the sand to the tops of each one and look down below at how small everyone at the bottom looks. If you power walk, It's a good half hour to climb the dunes to get to the beach and then 30 minutes back. The park always recommend setting aside 3-4 hours though.

*Gasp* I just realized that I don't think my husband has ever been. We need to go out there. It's one of those awesome natural wonders. :)

@Scribbles Didn't spend any time on the western side of Michigan. Now we have a good reason to go back to check out the Lake Michigan side. I love sand dunes, thanks for the tip. Might put that on my "to do" list for next year.

Very cool. I'd never heard the phrase UP and checked it out. Interesting area. Looked really nice. Saw that it's like a quarter of the land in Michigan but only 3% of the population. THAT'S where you want to be.

@Shannon27 Careful getting in to those clean, quiet areas. They have a way of making you move. Like I did. :) Glad it was a good one.

@Ynotisay Just think no internet and no cell phone service. Wouldn't that be great. One of our guides told a group we were hiking with one day if you need a bathroom stop just pretend you a bear and find a bush or tree.

@Shannon27 There you go. No internet or cell makes living someplace kind of tough but not having access to it for a bit is about the best way to refresh there is. I live in the mountains but backpack and hike a lot. Knowing there's no electronic access is an awesome feeling. Hope you get back there some day. You found a good place to unplug.

@Stereoguy We stayed at a Best Western at St. Ignace, Michigan. The prices were reasonable, and we had a full included breakfast each morning, Coffee, juices, cereals, make you own pancakes, sausages, scrambled eggs, bacon, pastries, fruit bananas and apples. The rooms were clean and comfortable fresh towels every day and it had indoor and outdoor heated pools and hot tubes. It was right on Lake Huron and the had a firepit where you could roast marshmollows or smores every night. There were places to eat nearby and if you want to go to Mackinac Island it was walking distance to where you could catch the ferry over to the island. You living in Florida I think it would be a good place for a break from the heat/humidity you are having.
