Just for the record, Canada does not officially recognize 'Dual Citizenship'.

If you become a Canadian Citizen, one must give up their prior citizenship from another country. Therefore, your friends are either of South African citizenship and are visiting Canada for a maximum of 183 days per year, or they hold Canadian Citizenship and are visiting South Africa for 183 days per year. It's one or the other.

That has all been changed as of about the time the Syrian Refugees started migrating across the world. I knew about that change, but I heard about that change once again only a week ago by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, prior to him leaving for the G20 summit in Germany.

@swirlie: no..the 183 days applies for permanent residents only..you can have dual citizenship in Canada.If you don't spend a183 days in a span of two years in Canada,you lose your permanent resident status.Nobody gives up citizenship in Canada,except the Chinese (because of Chinese laws)
