How can a thumb hurt but be numb after burning it?

Shouldn't it be one or the other, not both?

Nerves getting destroyed causes immense pain but there are biological shut off switches for pain once you reach certain levels. If the nerve is gone then once that switch is flipped there's nothing left to tell it anything further is wrong.

There are specific specialised protein-based toxins that disable this neurological effect, but it's otherwise a constant unless you have some very serious neurological condition.

@UndeadPrivateer: I burned my index finger too and that isn't numb

@fluteacorn: Didn't burn it as deeply, assumedly. Or else didn't damage anything. I've had burns that just fused my skin grain flat but didn't hurt or redden.

@UndeadPrivateer: It is red

@fluteacorn: Did you ice the burn immediately after it occurred?

@UndeadPrivateer: No, my dad had me out burn gel on, after I washed it.

@fluteacorn: Might just be highly superficial dermological damage then.
