I Was A Christian

As a child I was a christian. Then I grew up and saw sense.

It's amazing how ridiculous the whole Christian story sounds when eventually looking at it from the outside...

@walabby: That's it. Looking back I wonder how, even as a young child, I could ever have believed that rubbish.
walabby · 61-69, M
@suzie1960: Yep. It reads as though Jesus is trying to out-miracle any opposition.. :D
MartinII · 70-79, M
@suzie1960: I don't think I ever believed it. I just learnt it, a bit like history or geography at school. The first time I really thought about it, I decided I didn't believe it.

@MartinII: When I was at school we were forced to learn about christianity and read the bible. Several of us were beaten by the RE teacher for daring to say we didn't believe in her (christian) god.

@suzie1960: What a wonderful example of Christian womanhood she was! >:(
*sarcsam, of course*
MartinII · 70-79, M
@suzie1960: I learnt about the bible at Sunday School. It was OK, just an annoying waste of a Sunday morning. I have no recollection of school RE lessons, though I suppose there must have been some.

What age were you when that horrid woman beat you?
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@walabby: Her attitude was fairly typical of christians - they're right and everyone else is wrong. Beating us was just a toned down version of how christianity spread initially - by torturing and killing all non-christians.
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@MartinII: I was 13 at the time.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@suzie1960: About the age I became an atheist. I think your teacher must have been mad. Quite apart from the cruelty and inappropriateness, how could she possibly believe that beating you would make you more likely to become a good Christian. 🤔
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@MartinII: That's how christianity works, it's all about fear and mind contriol. Remember the basic christian teaching, if you don't worship their god you'll burn in Hell forever. She was just reminding us of that.

I'd discovered christianity was a load of crap much earlier.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@suzie1960: What happened after the beating? Did you and your friends pretend to have recanted?
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@MartinII: Yes, we just pretended to believe that crap.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@suzie1960: An irreverent postscript. At my grammar school, if someone was caned, a notice was placed on the board outside the head's study: for example "MartinII has been beaten for smoking". There would have been a bit of a stir if one day we had read "Suzie1960 has been beaten for refusing to believe in God".
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@MartinII: We didn't have anything like that but others were shocked that we'd been caned for not believing in her god. In those days teachers were seen as gods themselves and parents never questioned anything they did.

@walabby: What's more amazing is how some, supposedly intelligent, adults are taken in by it.
Sharon · F
@suzie1960: That was just sick. It shows how evil brainwashed christians can be.
walabby · 61-69, M
@Sharon: The ones that are indoctrinated as kids, and have grown up with it have an excuse, but the new converts must be sadly lacking in some vital area... :/
Sharon · F
@walabby: Even those that were indoctrinated as children should have seen through it as they got older and, hopefully, wiser. They tend to lose their beliefs in other entities like Santa Claus etc.
walabby · 61-69, M
@Sharon: True. The sense of smug self righteousness is a very addictive drug, though...
