Meh more seriously though, his regime had fallen and he knew in short time there'd be literally nowhere for him to hide (Unless you believe the conspiracy theorists, but in that case you might as well believe anything and the answer doesn't matter; though the answer makes sense). He would have been executed in any case, but not without being paraded, humiliated and quite likely tortured first. He also took some secrets to his grave, whether that was intentional or not, many people close to him benefited from that.
Not history buff enough to say whether that was pragmatism, or if he though that could help others finish what he started. Certainly, you can hypothesize had he been their star at Nurenberg Trials, forced to recant all his beliefs and teachings and admit to the atrocities, then ignominiously punished and executed, there would be lot less people willing to follow his ideals toady.
