The way I learned it. The main meal of the day....is dinner, whether you have it at noon or at 7 pm. If you have your main meal at noon, then the evening meal is supper. If you have your main meal in the evening, then the noon meal is lunch.
I don't know if that's right, or just how our family defined the two, but it's what I still go by.
