Following only gives easier access to someone's posts. It doesn't affect the ease to chat in any way, so that has nothing to so with following.

i didnt say anything about making it easier to chat...i said why do they follow if they dont plan to chat...thats pointless.

@annamarie65: I don't see a point in that. But you say you follow people you want to chat with, despite it not affecting chats in any way. Maybe others have their own reasons to follow people despite it not making any technical difference. Who are we to judge someone's reason to do something that doesn't affect us?
