Oh, they will indeed tell you. A letter, which will be mailed at some point, to explain what happened, will arrive. ALWAYS.
This.

A friend had his refund confiscated because he was behind on his student loans. A week or so later he got a letter explaining it.
Okay. Cause they sent a letter explaining my husband didn't file back in 2012 :/
So I filed for him. Our new taxes for 2016 were already filed and were processing. Well it's been since Feb. 22nd and our status changed from processing to we can't provide information to you at this time you will receive your refund in 21 days. Does that mean he didn't owe money and our taxes will continue or could that have taken money during that time and didn't inform us and we will get the remainder?
@AcidBurn: :( that would be awful they say that have to inform you so you can determine in there findings are correct.

@NearMiss: he was single not married and no kids at the time. He was just out of the army so he was on temp unemployment so no job. They never sent a letter saying he owed anything just wanted him to file the 2012 tax year

@NearMiss: that would be so awesome! I just yelled at him said damn single guys slack off on everything. I just am confused cause I know that they can take your money whenever. I just wasn't sure if they could take it without informing you of how much. Now we just have to wait for the refund and see if they even took anything at all
