Why is there such a disparity between the salaries of doctors and residents?

I'm a plastic surgery resident and I earn 38k/year. And this is Boston which basically means I can't afford anything. One of the plastic surgeons I work with earns 600k/year, and he is literally three years out of residency. Like he's almost the same guy he was during his fellowship and later years of residency.

@AlphaPuppy: Minimum wage is like 7 bucks. Working 8 hours a day for five days a week gets you to 14.5k. And that's taking into account if you work the absolute minimum.
