How did we humans become so intelligent?

Why are we more intelligent than other animals? How did we evolve?
What is the biggest and most important point in this?

That intelligence is debatable. I still think my rat is smarter than half the people I know. :')
haha i know what you mean but I mean that we can for example think about the past and think about what we want etc.
Animals normally cant do this.

@Totoro: Well rats are very empathetic, it has been proven. They have memories, etc. O.o I still think they are better than us. lmao
@MorbidCynic: that is really cool. Yes many humans are really false. And pets are the best :)

some people say its our ability to use complex language
shelfbark · T
but also because of our problem solving ability

I know within the human skeletal system there is a passage way that allows air to flow through thus giving us an ability to speak. Chimps and apes do not have this and so cannot communicate as well. It led to further advancements and knowledge over time

We aren't. We simply dominate because we have opposable thumbs.
But our mind is better. I meant that. we can think about the past etc

@Totoro: No, no it's not. We engage in wars.

Wouldn't it be cool if we could just speak directly to a collective Mother Nature or the universe itself and ask , "why ? Why everything ? What is the point ?"
i think it WOULD be cool yes
@shelfbark: or would we super mad :/

@Totoro: it's ok its the child's duty to piss off the parent

If you listen to lectures by Dr Neil Degrasse Tyson, or listen to startalk radio, they bring up a very interesting premise, the evolutionary benefit of our intelligence is derived from a 1% difference in similarity to primates, so in that 1% of difference, we get everything we've ever invented, everything ever made, and it stemmed the question, what if beings had a similar 1% difference to us, so that we looked like primates to them.
thank you really much :). Good answer

survival in groups and that humans developed farming
Firespirit · 26-30, M
yeah but farming is what separated us from every other animal tho up till then we were roamers
shelfbark · T
@Firespirit: nah we had ritual burial and art and tool making that separated us before then
Firespirit · 26-30, M
yeah but that turning point is where man kind became more than another animal they used nature to service them and became #1 race
Sent you a link about a book that covers this and our origin called "Sapiens"

We just are designed that way.
Well it's kind of subjective..We definitely are more intelligent than a lot of other animals.. It does seem like whales and dolphins are quite intelligent as well they just can't manipulate their environment like we can.
Yes. But then it is about which intelligence we talk about. Social or just what is the best way to be egoistic haha. Sure know what you mean.
@Totoro: Well yeah is it the ability to solve problems? Abstract thought? Self awareness? All of the above??? XD
ajoite · 51-55, F
Nope
popmol · 26-30, M
sadly i cannot say humans have intelligence :p we are more vicious then most animals.
Tennessee · 46-50, F
we have language
ajoite · 51-55, F
On what do you judge that humans are more intelligent than other animals?
Not in the moral way.
But humans can think about the past, future goals etc.

@Totoro: Animals have more of a connection to their past than we do, ancestral memories, that enables them to eat what is not poisonous for them, and travel sometimes back to a place they have never been to. We humans have to look up in a book what we can forage, animals know, it's a Link to their ancestors, a link we've forgotten.
You are right though that other animals generally deal with the here and now and any impending danger though
@ajoite: that is interesting. thanks
