In your mind how how trade zones and agreements created?

Anyone who has ever successfully negotiated anything knows that it takes diplomacy to get what you want. You can be a bully if you have power over the other party. The US has little power left, China, India and Europe are bigger trading powers. "Nice" is required if you want to get something.

Firing ambassadors with no plans on hiring replacements. Questioning the one China policy.

Hopefully when he understands the real implications of his off the cuff remarks and actually starts working it will get better.

I have been to China and Taiwan, I know that making assumptions with out facts is a bad way to start a discussion. I understand that China has made it clear that no negotiations will take place on one China.
If he really wants to start a discussion about One China, he can and should however it is a negotiation, not an ultimatum.
