@ the International Poetry Contest
Spectators were surprised to see a young man from Appalachia advance to the final round, where he faced the 5 time reigning champion poetry expert from Oxford.
For the final, the 2 were given the word Timbuktu and challenged to come up with a short verse on the spot. The Oxford don went first:
"Across the shimmering desert sand/Travelled the Sultan's caravan/Men and camels, two by two/On the road to Timbuktu"
The crowd went wild, cheering his apparent victory, but the young hillbilly still had his turn.
"That was amazing. I still don't know what 'tim-buck-too' means, but I'll give it a shot," he says.
"Me and Tim a-huntin' went/We come across an green pup tent/Well, the girls were three and we just two/So I bucked one and Tim bucked two!"
