ah technical stuff I kinda dig. as a first caveat, most of this I'm doing from memory; I could be completely off, but I think I recall this right. also, 'better' is always a matter of debate, right? depending on your end target, we might differ completely.

from what I recall the number refers to the number of pixels in a horizontal line across the screen, so 720 v. 1080, 1080 means there are many more pixels in use, 720 means they're using about 2/3 of them at a time, so 1080 should give you much more resolution. more screen area. make it capable of showing finer detail/resolution for any given object displayed on the screen. so off the bat, it initially sounds like 1080 should be the winner and case closed.

if I'm on track, the i or p is how the screen is rendered. p is 'progressive', i is 'interlaced' and from what I recall the progressive scan means that one complete frame is drawn, finished, then the next frame is done. in interlaced mode, a frame is drawn across half the screen, every other line displayed, then next frame is drawn on the unused half of the screen (frames are interlaced, mixed together). so a progressive mode is much better for fast action, where there might be significant change from one frame to the next. most sportsball game viewings are usually noted for preferring the progressive display to the interlaced. if you're looking at fairly static or slow moving things, the interlaced's higher resolution is often a better bet.

at least from what I recall.
