Why do I need a passport?
All governments have a watch list and facial recognition at airports. If I’m not on your list you don’t care who I am.

@meJess not sure, I don't know the process any more than just going abroad for leisure and to be fair I don't know the behind the scenes process for people arriving in a different country full stop. Perhaps it is in the actions of border control (do they log you in and out?) Where there is a necessity to know who is in the country maybe somebody knows the process better than us and can answer your question more accurately.
