I think it's so hard for many people to stay on the right path simply because virtue isn't rewarded. Vice is.

For a plant or an insect or an animal can be fairly easy to judge. They have low intelligence, hence easily predictable. You can prepare and protect yourself from their attack.
A man won't show his true colors until the moment right before he plunges that sharp knife deep into your heart, and mocks you while he does so. You won't have time to prepare. Only regret, as long as you live.
