How uninformed the west is as towards its own evil is and how Ukraine is not a nice place to be if you are not full blooded Ukrainian. Even then.....
SW-User
Historically, ukrainians spent thousands of years defending Ukraine against turks, Poland, Russians, soviets, Hitler, Austria @hippyjoe1955 etc. While general population mixes well with foreigners , there are some even kind of nazi minded small groups of people aiming at “purifying” the nation back to slavic tribes. They can easily incite anger in the rest of the population who has had “fighting for freedom” idea in their blood. Just like here in USA racism or fighting against racism is literally in some peoples DNA. Its pretty self explanatory

@SW-User Ukraine has not had fixed borders throughout its history and some areas now considered Ukraine were parts of other countries in times past. Russia, Hungary, Romania, Poland, parts of the former Czechoslovakia and even Moldova can all lay claim to some of the territory now said to be Ukraine.

@hippyjoe1955

What have been Finland's "fixed" borders? Or Poland's? Or Germany's (or should we say Prussia's)? Or Austria-Hungary's? Or Turkey's (or the Ottoman Empire's)? Or even France's borders? Shall I continue?

Russia, Hungary, Romania, Poland, parts of the former Czechoslovakia and even Moldova can all lay claim to some of the territory now said to be Ukraine.

Or your question can be flipped to say that Ukraine could lay claim to some of the territory now occupied by the other nations you mentioned.

But, in Europe, since World War II, the only border re-writing has been down with the legal breakup of nations: Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union.

Not because of a foreign invasion.

@beckyromero The point that you seem to have missed completely is the FACT that Ukraine won't let the Hungarians who have lived there for centuries speak Hungarian. The Russian who have lived in Eastern Ukraine for centuries are being killed by the Ukrainians. Reliable estimates put the deaths of Russians in Ukraine prior to hostilities at about 14,000 people whose only crime was wrong think. As I said the most amazing thing about this war is the ignorance of Americans and their lack of information about Ukraine.

I wonder what all the English-only folks up north will think of that comment?

This one's for you:

@beckyromero don't ask me. I grew up in a very multilingual community. A couple of kids I went to school with started grade one speaking German. My brother in law spoke French. My neighbors all spoke Dutch. If I went to the coffee shop I could hear the owners speaking Chinese to each other. The hardware store owners were Russian, The gas station was Romanian owner. Ukrainian was not uncommon. My grandfather was trilingual. His mother was German, his father was Russian and he spoke both languages until he came to America where he learned English.

@hippyjoe1955

So you don't have a problem with seeing Canadian street signs in French outside of Quebec?
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero Why would I? I can read them. I do have to laugh at some of the signs in the national parks though. They say Lake Talbot/Talbot Lac. Nothing wrong with it but I am pretty sure every one can figure out that Lake = Lac and Lac = Lake. Then there is the Americans getting all upset over Slave Lake. Of course Slave is the name of the native people who live in the area and is not pronounced slave. Slavvee is a better spelling but such is life. BTW if I go to my Grandmothers community many of the signs are in Cree so..... If you think I am some kind of racist you are dead wrong.

@hippyjoe1955

Nothing personal.

Just trying to flush out any possible hypocrisy in your Ukraine / Hungarian language comment. 😉

As for me, I am opposed to the effort to make English the official language of the United States. I prefer it as the language of government. But I don't want the government in the business of telling people what language they can speak in their homes or places of business. Nor do I have a problem with a business requiring that an employee be able to speak or understand English to do their job. But that business should not be allowed to legally fire an employee for speaking to a co-worker or a customer in a language other than English. Common sense needs to prevail.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero No hypocrisy at all. The fact is the government of Ukraine is more than a little nazi. Can you imagine killing people for wrong think or banning people from speaking their own language?
beckyromero · 36-40, FVIP
@hippyjoe1955

Come now, you don't really believe that Putin gives a rat's ass about who is speaking Hungarian or not in Ukraine?
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero Russia is not nazi. Ukraine is. Lets focus on the greater evil.
beckyromero · 36-40, FVIP
@hippyjoe1955

Russia is a totalitarian dictorship right now.

Ukraine is a democracy whose head of state and prime minister are both Jewish.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero And Ukraine a criminal money laundering state that is allowing bio weapons research to take place on its land. Ever wonder why America is all upset about Ukraine? It isn't because Ukraine is some sort of liberal democracy. America is upset because their money spigot is about to be turned off.
beckyromero · 36-40, FVIP
@hippyjoe1955

As if money laundering doesn't go on anywhere else. 😉

I suppose you'll now soon be calling for the Russian invasion of Switzerland.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero You really need to look at what is going on there. It is not just money laundering. It is 'aid money' given to Ukraine who in turn gives it to American politicians. It is a closed loop. The people of Ukraine don't benefit from American taxpayer's aid. American politicians gain most along with the corrupt Ukrainian officials who facilitate the transactions. Why do you think scammers like John McCain, Lindsay Graham, the Clinton Foundation, Bidens Pelosis Kerrys and Romney are all in Ukraine's corner. Be honest, do you think that if this was spat between Azerbaijan and Russia that the US would be this upset? I don't. The American greedy don't want to lose their money.
beckyromero · 36-40, FVIP
@hippyjoe1955
Why do you think John McCain, Lindsay Graham, Romney are all in Ukraine's corner.

Because they all understand that Russia is the greatest threat to American security.

I haven't specifically heard Biden or the Clintons say that in the past, although I suspect Biden is convinced of that now.

Pelosi has never been a foreign policy hawk and Kerry waffles back and forth.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero Russia is no threat to the US and it could and should have been made an ally decades ago. Silly Americans need a boogy man to scare the naive into action when the elites need to start a new war. War is very profitable for the American elites. That is why the US is the biggest war monger in the world. In my life Vietnam (too young for Korea) Grenada, Kososvo, Desert Storm, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan to name just a few. Hundreds of thousands of people killed to advance 'freedom' What joke.
beckyromero · 36-40, FVIP
@hippyjoe1955

Putin has said he would like to re-constituted the old Soviet Union (the borders, not necessarily the communist-style state itself; he has too much power to want to share or be accountable).

Vietnam was bad policy, I agree with Gen. Douglas MacArthur on that (he warned against involvement in Vietnam to both President Kennedy and Johnson).

Kosovo was because of "ethnic cleansing." Desert Storm? Even the Soviets backed us on that. I don't shed any tears for Muammar Gaddafi after Pan Am Flight 103. Afghanistan was because of bin Laden and 9-11. And I agree with Bush's decision to go after Hussein.

As Winston Churchill said, "Where there is great power there is great responsibility."

The world is a better place today because of the United States of America.

And I dare say that no nation in history ever helped free more people from tyranny.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero Putin has never said he wanted the old soviet union back. He has hearkened back to the Russian Empire but never the soviet union. That completely aside what has that got to do with being an ally with Russia? Its not like the US hasn't gone full communist. Strangely Putin is more on the side of free people than Biden. Hmmmmm BTW did you know that Putin asked Clinton if Russia could join NATO? Clinton was stuck for an answer. How do you keep someone your enemy when he wants to be your friend?
beckyromero · 36-40, FVIP
@hippyjoe1955
Putin has never said he wanted the old soviet union back.

Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.

You should know better by now that I would't lie to you.

Here's a news article, as well as where he is quoted as saying so on the Kremlin website site.

Taking questions from supporters in Russia's European exclave of Kaliningrad on March 2 (2018), Putin was asked what Russian historical event he would like to change.

"The collapse of the Soviet Union," Putin immediately said.

https://www.rferl.org/a/putin-says-would-reverse-collapse-soviet-union-1991-if-could-question-asked-kaliningrad/29076226.html

You can read the Kremlin site (English language version; Putin actually has an English language version of the Kremlin website. Can you imagine WhiteHouse.gov having a Russian language version?)... as soon as it is back up.

http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/transcripts/22931

As for Russia in NATO, you know the old saying: "Keep your friends close. And your enemies closer."

hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero There is a difference between regretting an event and wishing to undo an event. The facts that he has said the soviet union was a poorly thought out experiment that failed miserably. If you listen to him talk as I did AFTER the conflict broke out he never wished for the soviet union. He only mentioned the Russian Empire. Putin is no longer a communist. He recognizes the folly of it. He has even embraced the church the communists tried to eliminate.

Putin is no longer a communist.

Guess that's why he's got his minions preparing "legislation" to nationalize foreign companies.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero Believe it or not that is nazi not communist. Do try to keep up with your terminology. BTW what is the source for your information? CNN?
