Competition in athletics is an absurdity. No two people at the starting line will ever have identical biology: Why pit them against each other? Attempting to limit entrants by declaring which groups have equal potential - or by artificially trying to make their chances equal - is folly. But, with humans, 'what else is new?'
When nationalism is brought in to the picture it's even sillier (ignoring for the moment the potential to inflame existing animosities.) Why should I pride myself that someone who excels at something happens to hold citizenship in the same country as I do? Why would I have negative feelings if they don't?
