Gov May Scrap BBC TV Licence Once Fast UK Broadband is Universal
"The UK Government’s Minister of State for Media and Data (DCMS), John Whittingdale MP, has indicated that the BBC’s TV licence fee could be scrapped once everybody in the country finally has access to faster broadband connectivity. The idea may be considered for when the corporation’s royal charter expires in 2027.
At present a standard TV licence costs £157.50 per year (up £3 on the previous fee) and that will rise to £159 next month. Generally, you are considered to need a TV licence if you watch live channels or programmes live on any online TV service, including Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, ITV Hub or All 4. You don’t need a TV Licence if you only ever use online services to watch on-demand or catch-up programmes, except if you’re watching BBC content on iPlayer."

So without living in the UK, I'm guessing what'll happen is your big cities will get this better broadband service, but people living on the outskirts will be screwed, but they'll still have to pay the higher amount.
It's not like that at all in the US. You sign up with the company who provides cable service, Verizon, Comcast, Dish Network, DirecTV, etc. and then see what they offer. For us, we have Comcast. If we want, we could get what they call, Triple Play. It offers cable TV service, internet service and phone service.
We got rid of cable TV altogether, and we only have an internet plan through Comcast. It's what's known as Blast!, so it's 400MB download speeds and 10MB upload speeds. The problem is, you'll get the plan at some 2 year introductory rate like $29.99. Then after the two years, it jacks up to the regular price. BUT, there's a problem with that. It never stays at the regular price, it just goes up and up and up every year. Last year I was paying $97.95 a month for this Blast! plan, now I pay $100.95 a month.
The only way to get a lower cost, is to call them up on phone, and go to another plan only to go through the same thing all over again. So for us that's the shitty part. But it sounds pretty awful in the UK with that TV license fee :(
