Why do people hurt transgender people?

Why do people harass them? It breaks my spirit seeing my friends hurt.

I would say because some people are stupid/fools. But that wouldn't be right. Some people hurt them because they either do not understand or accept people that identify themselves differently. It's the same reason why people hurt others that are not heterosexual (straight), because they do not understand. Another one could also be misconceptions too. Such as a person thinking gender or sexual orientation is a choice, when it really isn't.
