First time in my life. Usually they say ´miss’. I must really be looking old now

Sir or Ma’am is used as a sign of respect, especially in the south and rural areas. For example, high school kids in the south will often use sir or ma’am even when talking to friends and peers. It doesn’t mean they think you’re old
