This morning I woke up to a friend saying she'd been in the hospital for the past 5 weeks with covid pneumonia. She is fully vaccinated and healthy. Seems there is nothing we can really do to keep completely safe.

There is no infallible way of avoiding Covid unless you avoid all human contact. The vaccines are very good but they're not 100% effective and there are people with preexisting vulnerability which increases their odds of getting covid even with two vaccinations. It's really a lottery, where the odds are low but someone will win (or in this case lose).
