Why do horror movies tend to be so bad

I like horror movies, but these types of movies are hard to find when they are oversaturated by trash.

They rely on lazy tropes.
Annoying stupid characters.
Loud jump scares.
Or gore for the sake of gore.
I like mystery in my horror. Which is why i love something like The Thing by John Carpenter.

@Jonjdw I remember loving some movies that got poor rating and were know to be bad so pretty much anything will have some people that enjoyed the content.
