In the word scent, which letter is silent the s or the c?

Which is the same way as I'd pronounce 'cent' and 'sent' but if some people pronounce it with a 'sk' sorta sound in it like school has then it makes it very hard to say really as the word may never of been designed to have a silent letter in it. I mean the way we pronounce it might have changed over time but the actual spelling just remained the same, lolz.🤷
