Neither of those, but when I was small some of my older relatives still practiced vodou rituals that I remember observing.

would you mind to share?@bijouxbroussard

@rahulkrish34 I don’t remember that much. An aunt “dressed” candles and prepared gris-gris bags which were talismans and occasionally she would send me and my cousin to the graveyard next door by my grandmother’s house in New Orleans for “graveyard dirt” used in some rituals. I never got involved after those days.

@bijouxbroussard wow that sounds serious lol
bijouxbroussard · F
@SW-User They did take it seriously, it was passed down from generations. But never in an attempt to harm anyone. That was also something they stressed.

@bijouxbroussard Which graveyard?

SW-User
@bijouxbroussard I wonder if they ever saw immediate effects from it
bijouxbroussard · F
@quitwhendone I’d have to check, tbh. This was over half a century ago.
bijouxbroussard · F
@SW-User In those days I was never told the particulars. But I imagine those who believed did.
bijouxbroussard · F
@quitwhendone It would’ve been in the 6th Ward, if that helps. Her house was torn down many years after she passed away.
quitwhendone · M
@bijouxbroussard That's Faubourg Treme.
bijouxbroussard · F
@quitwhendone Did you have any relatives who “practiced the old ways”, so to speak ?
quitwhendone · M
@bijouxbroussard Voodoo? I have a 3x great grandfather from Martinique who came here and supposedly practiced voodoo with Marie Laveau on the lakefront. None of the old relatives alive in my lifetime did any of that. Most of my family were/are devout Catholics.
bijouxbroussard · F
@quitwhendone Wow ! That’s amazing. Some of my grandmother’s roots were from Haiti, and those relatives were/are devout Catholics, too, but somehow many didn’t see the rituals as conflicting.

@bijouxbroussard Yeah, I've got ancestors on both sides that came from Haiti, St. Domingue, as it was called in the 19th century. A lot of Haitians came here in the early 1800s.
