I've thought about asking him, "I'm looking for new material to read but don't have any idea what to try. Do you have any suggestions?"

That is a great ice breaker. Just have be ready for where the convo might go, like favorite authors, books,etc. Most of all, let it flow naturally and see where it goes. Good,luck.
