I am not sure how much an electrical element's life is affected by number of on/off cycles, as after all that is only what the thermostat is doing, but they do have a definite life. (As I found once when with precious little time for a shower between arriving home and going out for an arranged meal, I had to make do with a stand-up bath using several kettles-full of hot water!)
A combination boiler, as I have, though is a different matter since it is a complicated mix of electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering. Lots more to go wrong, and unlike a simple immersion-heater, not something the householder can repair - unless a fully-trained, 'Gas Safe' registree.

It's clear from comparing my remarks with yours and Ninalanyon's that we have different hot-water systems so obviously those can't be compared directly. Also the system's efficiency and life-span will be affected by the installation, even before how heavily it it used.
I think a safe efficiency comparison of the sort in Thepowerjedilord's qestion, can only be carried out on the specific installation; though it is possible to gain general estimates. I suspect the biggest difficulty is comparing house to house is probably not the characteristics of the individual system but the cost of the gas or electricity and water used, espcially in the UK with its tangle of different suppliers and whether the house is on metered or fixed-rate water bills.
