My dear, if you actually think that the Democratic Party of today is the party of the 1850s and 60s, you must have been sleeping through your American history classes. In fact, after the Civil Rights Act, bigoted southern Democrats and segregationists switched parties. They became Republicans. Today, the party platforms of BOTH Republican and Democrats are quite different from what they were 150 years ago.

@EmiliyStar Byrd filibustered the Civil Rights act.
"during the senator's eulogy, Biden described Byrd as "fiercely devoted to his principles," a "friend," "mentor" and a "guide""

@Pherick With a little research, the actual voting record for both Houses of Congress shows that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed the Senate on a 73-to-27 vote. The Democratic supermajority in the Senate split their vote 46 (69%) for and 21 (31%) against. The Republicans, on the other hand, split their vote 27 for (82%) and 6 against (18%). Thus, the no vote consisted of 78% Democrats. Further, the infamous 74-day filibuster was led by the Southern Democrats, who overwhelmingly voted against the act.
An examination of the House vote shows a similar pattern. The House voted 290 to 130 in favor. Democrats split their vote 152 (61%) to 96 (39%) while Republicans split theirs 138 (80%) to 34 (20%). The no vote consisted of 74% Democrats. Clearly, the 1964 Civil Rights Act could not have been passed without the leadership of Republicans such as Everett Dirksen and the votes of Republicans.

@EmiliyStar
And just because 1 Democrat senator switched after the civil rights act doesn’t mean the parties switched.
just because one Democratic senator was racist doesnt mean its the whole party
And just because 1 Democrat senator switched after the civil rights act doesn’t mean the parties switched.
EmiliyStar · 31-35, F
Umm no in fact they didn't about 20 years after the KKK came to be the parties switched the Democrats became Republicans and Republicans Democrats. if you actually paid attention to history youd know that
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@carpediem Republican Party is not fighting to have women and minorities voting stopped. Pure propaganda.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti Absolutely. But you can't tell a kid her age anything. They know it all.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@carpediem I know that for a fact.

lol. I'm not a Democrat but your "argument" has been made so many times here on SW over the years it's gotten very moldy and developed ingrown hairs. 🤣
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
they founded and funded the kkk btw funny how they dont teach you that in history

@Stereoguy that never happened because i said it didnt and i will just tell you it didnt until you get tired and walk away
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@Stereoguy Right - They would have us believe Lincoln was a democrat. The stigma of having protected the institution of slavery will always be with the Democratic party.
Pherick · 41-45, M
Always awesome when people who have no clue about history act like they do .. 🤣 Want to do some reading and try again?
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
I think you're showing that you can't tell 1866 from 2021 ... You're a Republican?

SW-User
@ozgirl512 lol. What gave him away? 😂
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@ozgirl512 I'm not a republican.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@TheArbitrator The first part still appears to stand, though ..

I don't care about what happened 100 years ago. Show me what motivates the person today.
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
That's not the party history, that's the country's history.
Or are you going to say the moon landing and the end of World War II was a Democratic Party accomplishment?

EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@TheArbitrator So the Democracts won the space race and ended World War II?
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@EuphoricTurtle Those were bipartisan efforts. That's the difference.
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@TheArbitrator So by that logic, your claim is that the Republican Party has always been against the institution of slavery, the discrimination of minorities and disenfranchising groups from voting?
Think carefully before answering such a simple question 😉

So we all agree we need a people's party that's into guaranteeing equality with universal entitlements.
Baremine · 70-79, C
@Stopmakingsense we needs a people's party without entitlements. That way the government doesn't rob my paycheck and spend the money for other things like supporting lazy people.
Stopmakingsense · 61-69, F
@Baremine you're paying more to avoid them.

Your party protected the institution of slavery, gave rise to the KKK, allowed whites to
Discriminate against blacks and disfranchise Blacks from voting
Discriminate against blacks and disfranchise Blacks from voting
Yeah, back then during the early days of U.S. history. Plenty of things have changed since then, now you have a GOP lawmaker urging schools to teach the "good side of slavery" and the GOP pushing a bill to ban teaching the history of slavery in classrooms.
Baremine · 70-79, C
I'd be embarrassed to say I was a democratic.
BiasForAction · M
Oh my your mind is so very small if this is the logic you bring to the table.
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@BiasForAction That may be your opinion but facts are facts.
BiasForAction · M
@TheArbitrator idealogical thinking is lazy thinking. But you go ahead and do whatever your party tells you to do, like a good lemming.
They flipped. Nuff said.
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@canusernamebemyusername They never flipped. The Democratic party ideology today is very consistent to what it has always been. The only difference is that Democrats devised a scheme to secure the black vote. There's no flipping. You can't take what Democrats did and ascribe it to Republicans.
@TheArbitrator I can't help you if you don't meet a minimum standard of education. You have to learn the alphabet before you can read. You have to know some basic history before you can comment on what has happened.
If the parties didn't flip what was the southern strategy? Why did all but Maryland vote republican with Nixon? And why do democrates want to ban confederate monuments and the confederate flag but the Republicans say to leave "our" heritage alone when those weren't originally their heritage but the democrates instead.

@iamBen Then create a new party. Why use the title of a party that protected slavery?

If you think there are no ties to the KKK or racists in the republican party you're strongly mistaken.
