That doesn't sound like a generic compliment. That sounds like a specific compliment. If people keep telling you you've got pretty lips you should believe at least that other people find your lips beautiful, regardless of how you feel.

Like people compliment my eyes. They drive me crazy because they're lopsided.

I get that compliment too, but I actually like it. Though it would be nice to get complimented more on something besides physical attributes.
