why do people in america say gas station but people in england (where i live) say petrol station

ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Because who wants to use the same wordings as a country that eats things like spotted dick and toad-in-the-hole?

According to that bastion of information Google,
"Petrol is short for petroleum. Which is unprocessed crude or shale oil.
Gas is short for gasoline. Which is a petroleum byproduct.
It's gasoline that is used to power most internal combustion engines !

Gas petrol
I may be wrong but I don't think I am. It stems from the Revolutionary days. A passive form of revolt.

I've read the differences in spellings came about because the guy (Webster?) who wrote the first American dictionary wanted to differentiate between us and the Brits. But the differing words I think are just random -- like a car's bonnet and hood, the car's boot or trunk, a lift or elevator, etc.

Because different countries call things different names

@Stereoguy: Sadly the Newberry's is gone -- it made it into the late 1980s or early 1990s, then disappeared, replaced by a drug store. The soda fountain was probably just ripped out and trashed. :(
