After all G-d has done for this country, why do Americans want to turn their back on him? Could this country have become so great without G-d?

It's the Constitution and Bill of Rights which is the best thing about the U.S. The first article of the Bill of Rights reads;

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

This is what is meant by the phrase Separation of Church and State.

@badminton Except that phrase isn't in the
Constitution

@LoveTriumphsOverHate "Separation of Church and State" summarizes the First Amendment protection of freedom of religion and prohibition of theocracy.

Some religions and their believers are very intolerant. Some want to force their interpretation of religion on the rest of society. They often hate every other religion and would engage in harassment and violence against those who have other beliefs, if society and government did not not prohibit such actions.

I am very grateful to live in a country where we have secular government and freedom of religious belief.

@badminton The constitution is only as good as the people defending it. In the end, when Christians are a minority, we will be forced to stop practicing the religion - or face persecution - as it is in China.

@LoveTriumphsOverHate With our Bill of Rights any person may practice whatever religion they wish: Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Wiccan, Atheist, or whatever.

We are a diverse country with many religions being practiced. Intolerant believers would cause a great deal of upheaval and conflict if they were not required to accept religious tolerance and secular government.
