So, when you mix salt with ice, it makes ice colder, but it also lowers the freezing point, thereby melting the ice. I'm confused as how this works?

Thermodynamics
Chemical reaction both drops the temperature, and lowers the refreezing point. Salt water also boils at a higher temperature
Melting absorbs thermal energy. Dropping the melting point means more energy is absorbed (or at leat sooner)
