I believe it's intended for places that don't have access to an environment where chickens can be easily delivered or raised, or a reliable freezing refrigeration system is not possible.
It's a big planet with tundras oceans and deserts and not everyone spends most of their time near the food supply.

Besides. Boiled up and added to other foods it's almost identical to ordinary chicken.
