I wish that in addition to an "adult" tag, there was a "politics tag"
Then I could just somehow opt out and filter them out. I know I get drawn into these discussions more often than I should. (In fact, just once is more than I should.) This was the primary reason I stopped using Facebook, everything is politics, politics, politics.
To be clear, I actually really enjoy an intelligent and respectful political discussion. Unfortunately, a vast majority of people aren't interested in discussion - they want to either score points, parrot echo chambers, or to yell nonsense.
I am all for discussing why you believe Keynesianism works or does not work. Or if you believe that Britain's retreat from the primary global power was inevitable or not. But what I get instead are such sensationalistic statements like "XYZ hates our country!!!111" "So and so is destroying our country!!111" "Can you believe they said this? OMG they are so dumb! <insert out of context snippet>"
If you truly believe these things about the opposing side, you are in an echo chamber and really need to get out there more and face uncomfortable points of view without being driven to anger and lashing out. It is possible to understand a point of view, even if you don't agree with it, and respectfully come to some sort of middle ground. More often than not you will find you want the same things, but just believe in two different ways of getting there.
But most important - be consistent. If it is not ok for "them" to do it, don't accept "us" doing it. And vice versa.
