I haven't eaten red meat for decades, and only occasionally chicken, but this is a complex issue. Personally, I think meat from cows needs to be systematically moved out of your food chain. As much for the methane they produce as anything. Cattle raised for meat (other than veal) is a different experience than chickens crowded in to spaces living in their own shit.
But humans are omnivores. Our bodies are designed that way. It doesn't mean people HAVE to eat meat. But evolution has made that a part of what we are. So I'm not sure if drawing the line between being sympathetic to the plight of a dog or cat is necessarily in line with consuming animal products.

@Ynotisay I don't think people are ever going to stop eating meat entirely, but more public attention must be brought to the conditions the animals are made to live in while they're being raised for meat and dairy consumption. There's a lot of inhumane stuff that it considered standard practice in the pork and beef industries. Surely, there have got to be less cruel ways to raise and kill them...
Meat and poultry producers must be required to create systems that involve raising and killing them which allows them to at least live normally and minimizes the pain they experience. It's disgraceful
