Why is it African Americans? Never hear European Americans, or terms like that. Should I describe myself as Celt English?

@meJess The term comes from a desire not to use names from our slave owning past.

@meJess Anyway the term African American was created inorder to denote a specific ethnicity of people. White Americans will normally identify as being part Italian and part Jewish or of Celtic origin. African Americans don't have any specific country to pull from.
You will also hear the term Native American or Asian American sometimes as well.

@Fukfacewillie If you are in the US the political term is African American. 🙂

@Zonuss I’m fine either way. “Black” has made a comeback, too. A bit of “reclaiming.”

@Fukfacewillie For me black is informal and AA is for very formal uses such as politics.
