Do you care if your smartphone case is scratched or anything?

I am not rich, and I intend to keep my smartphone for at least five years. So – it's in a durable case, and I have applied a screen protector.

Not at all. It's just a tool to me. It isn't like it's a car or house. I don't even care about cracked screens as long as it still works.
