I feel like some parents try to relive their childhood through their kids

And that damages them because if the kid doesn't have similar interests then they'll never get their parents' approval. I was just watching this episode of the Bernie Mac show and realized this. Makes sense to me now. I'm pursuing a graduate degree at a top 3 university in the world but no matter what I did through my life it was never enough for my pops. I stopped caring about his approval ages ago anyway, but if I have a kid I guess I'll try my best to show interest in their hobbies, however weird it might seem to me, and support them the best I can. This was supposed to be a story but SW doesn't have stories anymore so oh well.

I wholeheartedly agree with that. Parents who feel like it is too late for them and try to push it on to their kids, which may be with good intentions but it also may go against what the child ultimately wants in life. Glad you stopped looking for his approval. This was a good story, nonetheless.

@MistahJ exactly! He wanted me to join the military and was really disappointed when I went to a regular college. He also forced stuff on me a lot (with good intentions I guess) without wanting to know what *I* really wanted. I'm glad my life is turning out well anyhow and I gotta be really careful not to make the same mistake with my kids

@somedude15 Mm. Always under the guise of “it’s what is best for you” or “you’ll understand when you are older” which may be true in some cases by not all of them. Any who, it’s a good thing you forged your own path and hopefully apply a similar mindset when being with your own children.
