If you've used antidepressants before, how do they work?

Like if you're feeling sad, and you take them do you suddenly feel happy and forget what you were sad about?

They aren't happy pills. They are anti-depressants. They just make the sad less. But they don't make you happy. Drugs of abuse do things like that. That is why they are abused.
