What's up with extra virgin olive oil?

Every time I've seen it at the store it's always extra virgin. What about just virgin olive oil? Or just olive oil? Why the virgin and why the extra??? I don’t get it!!!

I assume it's supposed to mean pure and unprocessed, but as far as I'm concerned it's all just puffery.

@BlueVeins Puffery?
BlueVeins · 22-25
@Redstar generally, the practice of advertisers playing up their product to be more significant or impressive than it actually is. Which is pretty much ubiquitous lol

@BlueVeins Right. It is unprocessed oil.

@BlueVeins Ah, right. That shit should be illegal.
If they made a good product, all they'd have to do is be honest about it and people would buy it.

@Redstar Well, it's illegal to make dishonest factual claims. Usually it's just subjective shit like "our cookies are the best ever made" or whatever. "Extra virgin," so to, is technically a subjective term with no standardized definition.
